ATTENTION iPad MathGirls!
There’s a strange volume glitch with our apps and some iPads. A wonderful MathGirl mom discovered a solution.

1. Go to Settings > General
2. Under “Use Side Switch to” If Mute is set, select Lock Rotation OR if Lock Rotation is set, select Mute.
(Have the side switch in the off position–the orange dot not visible)
3. Run MathGirl and confirm that you can change the volume using the physical volume buttons
4. (Optional) Set the side switch in settings back to either Mute or Lock Rotation and use the side switch as you normally would.

Voile! Fixed!

Please let us know if you still have issues.

I want to know how to use math girl and arithmaroo. My daughter has gone thru the counting. Where is the addition and subtraction. Whty does it force her to select a level? How do I move to a more difficult level?

admin August 1, 2010 at 5:51 pm

Hi Kelly,
If your daughter has gone through level 12 of MathGirl Number Garden, then she has played all of the levels. She might have to replay levels to earn enough stars to build a tree house and to further build her garden.
MathGirl games allow girls to replay levels for practice and to make more points for their gardens. When they replay lower levels, they find that they have gotten faster and the game is easier. It builds confidence.
Right now my daughter and I are working on an update which will give you more levels and more prizes for your garden. We are also working on MathGirl Addition House.
Thanks so much for asking! We always appreciate our player’s input.

I think it’s a cute and fun app for kids to learn math. Hey, I’d play it too! Just to make sure I’m still as sharp :P

I like this a lot. I’m a math teacher, and a lot of girls just don’t think that they can be good at math. This looks great, and I’d like to have it for my 8 year old granddaughter to use. I want her to be good at math, too.

Jacqueline August 17, 2010 at 9:25 am

I am about to buy my first iphone and looking for educational apps for my 4.5 year old boy and my 3.5 year old girl. I love that Math Girl Games offers something specifically for my daughter, as she is often just stuck following in her big brother’s footsteps!
(but I suspect it will be so much fun that he will want to play/learn too!)

You are having a free 24 hours for Number Garden but it is not free on Australian iTunes.

admin August 20, 2010 at 4:57 pm

We had no idea that it wasn’t free in Australia. We marked the price in our developer section of iTunes. It seemed to apply to all of them. I’m wondering–What’s the date in Australia right now? It’s August 20, 4:55 PM in Hawaii. The app is free until 5 PM our time.

beverly edwards September 17, 2010 at 3:07 am

beverly edwards September 17, 2010 at 3:50 am

I have never received an answer tomy problem. please help . my daughter was helped by the part we got

admin September 17, 2010 at 11:47 am

We’re so sorry, Beverly! We are on Hawaii time so we received your first message at 3:07 a.m. Then our site was down for about an hour this morning.
Here is my emailed reply:

We’re so sorry to not get back to you sooner.

“More games” is a link to our website at icanologyllc. Our websites are down this morning — I have no idea why and we’re working on it. The other game we have is Arithmaroo, but it’s really just the first version–and not half as good–of Number Garden.

But your daughter probably wants to play MathGirl Addition House. We’re finishing it up today and submitting it to iTunes on Monday.
It wi.l be available in about 2 weeks. You’ll get an upgrade for Number Garden and the link will be there. I’ll also email you when it’s available.

The next version will have a change to the “more games” button. Thanks so much!

I saw the update for the Addition House today on my apps. I have an iPod touch 2nd Gen. My dauhter had mastered all 12 in the Number Garden, continued playing for more points also. She was waiting so patiently for the new updates. So too our supprise we see the update for Addition House, and now since the update~~~ it crashes/knocks us off the game. My daughter was so upset. I know there is a time delay, we are in Fl. USA EST.
I did reboot my iPod, to NO avail!!! Please, I hope things can be fixed, I have been so happy with the Number Garden, it really helped my DD with her math skills. She is 7, Second grade, and knows all her mulit. tables. Her teacher even asked about the App and uses it with her students, and the 1st Grade teacher. I have many math apps, but my girl really Loves Math Girl. Please help us with whatever the problems are!!!
Loving mom of Math Girl :)

Lynn@MathGirl October 3, 2010 at 8:12 am

Yikes! Thanks for telling us! We’re so happy that your daughter love MathGirl–It’s distressing that the app is crashing for her! We’re on it right now.

Kirk October 6, 2010 at 11:19 am

why is your app so loud?

Lynn@MathGirl October 6, 2010 at 10:12 pm

I’m so sorry to take so long to reply, Kirk.
Interesting that our app is so loud on your device. We haven’t experienced the problem in our testing so we’ll have to do some testing for
just volume on other devices. Are you using an ipod touch or an iphone?

As you probably know, you can turn the sound down with the volume button on the side of the phone.
Thanks for taking the time to let us know that you’re having a problem with our app. It’s how we learn to make our apps better!

Helen October 31, 2010 at 6:29 am

I have purchased math girl for my iPhone. Every time you attempt to access the house area the app crashes and sometimes freezes entire iPhone. Please rectify this problem – not happy as this was not a free app!!! The math game works fine, but my daughters v upset she can’t spend her hearts she earned as it describes in the synopsis of this game in app store… :(

Lynn@MathGirl November 18, 2010 at 8:51 am

HI Helen, We’re so sorry to take so long to get back to you! We didn’t see your post until today! Usually it pops up in our support emails.
Here’s the problem:
We used code from Apple to eliminate the spaces in the sign in box. We have since discovered that it doesn’t work for international characters/languages.
If you delete the app and reload it from itunes–It will be free–and then sign in without leaving spaces, then it will probably work.
If that doesn’t work, look out for version 1.0.1. We submitted it to iTunes yesterday! It could take 2 to 10 days to go live.
Thanks for taking the time to get back to us! Although we test extensively before we release, we have to rely on the help of wonderful people like you!

Lynn@MathGirl November 20, 2010 at 4:00 am

HI Helen, MathGirl Addition House version 1.0.1 is now available in itunes. It will pop up in your device as an upgrade. We hope that this will work for you!
Thanks again for contacting us. Lynn

Elsa November 20, 2010 at 8:04 pm

Hello there is a bug in your app and it’s preventing my daughter from playing: she tapped somewhere on the s reen while decorating her house. It caused the keyboard to pop up and there is no way to close it down as it obscures a large part of the screen, the bottom, which is where the buttons are. The keyboard should not be allowed to pop up, it needs to be locked down, really. I guess until an update is released this will remain. I just bought the app this morning, she loves it but she’s only had t’en minutes of play!!

Also, please allow special characters so children with accentuated letters can write their real name and recognise it.

Thank you

Lynn@MathGirl November 25, 2010 at 8:29 am

Hi Elsa,
This is a new bug for us. How distressing! I’m going to follow up by email. We need to get specifics to track this bug down.
Thanks for caring enough to get back to us and thanks for the suggestions.

Han January 15, 2011 at 9:26 pm

I have the most current version of MathGirl Number Garden and MathGirl Addition House. An older version used to work. However, the new version just shows me an intro screen and then I get booted back out into my phone’s home screen. This happens with both apps! Can you fix this please?

Susan February 12, 2011 at 9:36 am

This is the best visual concrete pictures with abstract numerals for addition that I have found. Love the equation graphics & easy interface. One big problem that I hope you can modify for those of us dealing with special needs; the reinforcement / reward schedule has no administrative over-ride or setting controls. (unless I’m just not seeing them) For my adult daughter with significant special needs this is a fantastic learning program, yet frustrating because she needs to have access to the perks on a very individualized reinforcement schedule. Right now I am quickly answering equations in-between her slow responses so that she can get the rewards. Not a great way to continue! Please offer administrative controls to unlock all rewards. Thank you.

Lynn@MathGirl February 12, 2011 at 3:24 pm

Thanks so much for contacting us, Susan. We’ll put your suggestion on our list for the next updates–Good idea!

Lynn@MathGirl March 8, 2011 at 5:08 am

Hi Genie, After playing a level, clicking the arrow takes you to the choose level page where you can choose to play again or play the next level.
We haven’t gotten this complaint so please let us know asap if this helps or not! Thanks for contacting us. Lynn

David August 12, 2011 at 5:27 am

Please fix the volume control for the iPad 2. Plays music at max volume – so annoying the kids won’t use it.

Lara August 14, 2011 at 7:07 am

My daughter and I are having the same problem that Elsa described above in November 2010. In the process of decorating her house, my daughter tapped something on the keyboard that caused the screen to pop up. There is no way to make it go away, and the only “solution” we’ve found is to shut the iPod down and start over :( Did anyone figure out a solution between November 2010 and August 2011? My daughter loves this game and it’s getting her speedier with addition, which is great. Thanks.

Lynn@MathGirl August 14, 2011 at 7:26 am

Hi Lara, We’re so sorry that you’re having problems!! We can’t seem to reproduce this bug, so we can’t fix it. Elsa deleted the game from her ipod and then reloaded it–iTunes allows you to do that for free. Then it worked. We test extensively but with so many versions and so many devices, we developers can’t target everything. And thanks for letting us know. It’s the only way that we can improve.

Lynn@MathGirl August 14, 2011 at 7:30 am

Hi David, Thanks for the head’s up. We’ve had a few complaints about this and your’s put us over the edge. We’ll be putting a volume control into a new version–It will take a couple of weeks. Meanwhile your kids can turn the volume on the device itself.

Lynn@MathGirl August 14, 2011 at 7:37 am

Shauna, I’m sorry that it’s taken so long to get back to you, and we’re so sorry that you’re having this problem. It’s rare. We test extensively on a variety of devices and versions and just can’t find this bug. One mom found that when she deleted the game from her device and then reloaded it–iTunes allows that for free–the problem went away. I hope that this works for you!

Lynn@MathGirl August 14, 2011 at 7:50 am

No. I’m sorry. We have only developed for the iPhone. Thanks for asking!

Danielle September 7, 2011 at 4:46 pm

This app is wonderful. Thank you. And I am glad to know you will be adding a volume control. Just FYI, on our ipad2, the music is at the highest volume even when I have the device’s volume turned completely off. I have no idea how that is even possible, but it is true. Cannot wait for a quieter update!

Jenny September 23, 2011 at 10:35 am

I want to buy math girl addition house for my iPad 2. One reviewer wrote it doesn’t work with iPads. Is this true?

Lynn@MathGirl September 23, 2011 at 10:51 am

MathGirl games are formatted for iphones and ipods and, like other apps, they work on ipads in 1x and 2x sizes. Kids use it on my ipad!

Lynn@MathGirl September 23, 2011 at 10:58 am

Thanks so much, Danielle! We’re working on an in-app volume control this morning and hope to submit it early next week. iTunes testing at submission didn’t catch it and we still haven’t been able to replicate the problem with our ipads or ipad2s. (twilight zone music)

Christina November 16, 2011 at 4:47 pm

While playing on the iPad the keyboard popped up in the middle of the app and we could not get it to go away. Hopefully you can fix this soon in an update. Thanks!

Sheree December 14, 2011 at 8:58 am

My dtrs started playing this and totally loved it but now a keyboard has popped up and won’t go away so they can’t play it anymore… I am not happy to pay for an app for less than two hours of play.. Is there a fix? We are using iPad 2

Lynn@MathGirl December 15, 2011 at 7:57 am

Hi Sheree,

I’m so sorry that you’re having problems with MathGirl.

Thanks for contacting us about it. We learn from feedback from thoughtful customers like you!

We test extensively. Our apps are well-designed but bugs do appear in all complex apps, fortunately very infrequently, often for unknown reasons. Usually the bug disappears when you restart the app.

Can you turn the app and your ipad off, and then restart them?
If that doesn’t work, you can delete the app and then reload it from iTunes at no additional charge.

If you still have problems, please let us know. I hope that your MathGirls have fun with our apps!

Lynn@MathGirl December 15, 2011 at 7:59 am

Oh, dear. Christina, I just spotted your Nov. 16 note. Please read my response to Sheree about restarting the app. If you still have a problem, please let me know! Lynn

Mari January 17, 2012 at 12:59 pm

I am also having the same problem with the keyboard. I guess you don’t understand little kids if you think an adequate solution is to delete the app and reload it. Sure, I can do it for no extra charge, but it also erases all the data. So what do I tell my granddaughters who have worked hard to “decorate” their houses???? Please try to fix this bug. I see several complaints about it so I don’t think it is rare.

Sara H February 18, 2012 at 6:54 am

I just purchased this and my 5yo loves it. She is now in tears because the iPad keyboard popped up and is blocking the game. No matter what I do, I am unable to get her back to the game. Please advise.

Sara H February 18, 2012 at 7:13 am

I uninstalled and reinstalled and am still experiencing the keyboard popping up after only 5 minutes of play. Quite disappointing.

Amy Gray February 18, 2012 at 2:35 pm

Just wondering if the multiplication app is still in the works? My second grader is ready for it and keeps asking :) . We love the Math Girl apps!!!

Rachelle February 22, 2012 at 9:35 pm

We’ve had your Addition hose app for a few days and my daughter is enjoying it (actually, my son is too). There seems to be a couple of glitches though. First the volume is not controlled by the ipad – it doesn’t matter what volume we set, the app is always equally loud, and more seriously, the keypad appears randomly during the game and we can’t get rid of it. This freezes the game. Any suggestions?

Amyemmert February 26, 2012 at 6:13 am

Hi my daughter loves this as well but the keyboard popping upside still an issue and also when she was decorating her house a page advert for the garden game came up and we couldn’t. Get back to her game without rebooting. Please help?

Lynn@MathGirl February 27, 2012 at 6:56 am

Hi Rachelle, I’m so sorry that you had problems. We just added the solution to the top of the support page at It’s a strange glitch happening on some ipads. I hope that this works! Lynn

Lynn@MathGirl February 27, 2012 at 6:57 am

Sara, What device are you using? If it’s an ipad, try the solution at the top of the support page at Please let us know if it doesn’t work!

Lynn@MathGirl February 27, 2012 at 7:02 am

Hi Mari,

I’m so sorry to take so long to get back to you and that your granddaughters had problems with our apps.

Did you see the solution for the ipad that we posted on the top of the support page

We do extensive testing on many devices and we have very clean code, but glitches pop up in
different versions of different devices. We can only find out what is going on through user feedback!

If you aren’t using an ipad, can you please send which device you’re using and what operating system it is?
Then maybe we can track down the issue.

Thanks so much for buying MathGirl games!

Lynn@MathGirl February 27, 2012 at 7:05 am

I’m so sorry, but we’re working on an important new project and have shelved multiplication for a while. We’re so happy that you love our apps!

Lynn@MathGirl February 27, 2012 at 7:08 am

Hi Amy, Can you please tell me what device and operating system you’re using? iPad, iPhone, iPod?
We have some glitches going on with new iPads and a mom discovered a
solution. You can see the solution at the top of the support page at

Thanks for your comment! We test extensively with a number of different devices but we can’t
cover it all. We developers have to rely on people to let us know how our products are working.
